A trench can look like a simple scope of work until the bucket finds a gas line, fiber conduit, electrical feed, irrigation main, or abandoned pipe that no one knew was there. At that point, a few feet of excavation can become an emergency, a shutdown, or a costly repair. Knowing how to check before trenching gives your crew the information needed to excavate with control instead of hope.

The right process is not just placing a call and waiting for paint on the ground. It means understanding the planned excavation, arranging the proper utility locating, reading the markings correctly, and exposing utilities safely when the work gets close. Public utility marks are a critical starting point, but they do not always tell the whole story.

How to Check Before Trenching Starts

Start checking before equipment is mobilized. If trenching is planned for a new water line, drainage system, electrical service, fence installation, sign footing, foundation repair, or site utility work, the investigation should happen early enough to address conflicts without stopping the project.

Define the exact excavation area

A locator can only investigate the area your team identifies. Walk the site and establish the intended trench route, its width, expected depth, and any tie-in points. Mark the proposed path in white when appropriate, including turns, bore pits, connection points, and areas where equipment will stage or cross the route.

This step matters because buried utility risk is not limited to the centerline of a trench. A wider excavation, sloped trench wall, or unexpected change in route can bring the work closer to a facility that appeared to be outside the original scope. If the route is still flexible, identify alternatives before locating begins. Moving a planned line a few feet may be easier than redesigning the work after markings are on the ground.

Document what is known about the property as well. Existing utility drawings, prior surveys, as-built plans, old repair invoices, and conversations with facility staff can provide useful clues. Treat them as reference material, not proof. Utility records may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate, particularly on older sites and properties that have changed hands several times.

Contact 811 for public utility marking

Call 811 or submit a locate request before excavation as required in your state. The 811 process notifies participating utility owners of planned digging so they can mark their facilities or provide a response. Allow the required notice period and verify that all utility responses are complete before work starts.

The paint and flags placed on site identify the approximate location of marked public facilities. Crews should know the color code, but colors alone do not replace careful verification. A marked line can indicate electric, gas, communications, water, sewer, or other utility infrastructure. Read any letters, arrows, measurements, and facility-owner information included with the marks.

Just as important, respect the tolerance zone around a marked utility. State requirements vary, so follow the applicable law and the utility owner’s excavation instructions. When work approaches a marked facility, use safe exposure methods, such as careful hand digging or vacuum excavation, to visually confirm the line and its depth. Never assume a painted line is exact enough to dig beside with a machine.

Understand what 811 may not locate

This is where many trenching plans fail. 811 requests generally address participating public utility facilities, not every buried line on private property. A service line from a meter to a building, private electric feeding a detached structure, site lighting, parking lot power, irrigation, communications cabling, private water distribution, septic components, or abandoned infrastructure may not be included in a standard utility response.

Commercial properties often have a particularly complicated history. Additions, tenant improvements, replaced services, private fire lines, and undocumented repairs can leave active or inactive utilities outside the public system. Residential properties can present the same issue, especially where sheds, pools, garages, landscape lighting, or previous additions are involved.

If a line serves only the property or runs beyond the utility owner’s point of responsibility, arrange a private utility investigation. This is not duplicate work. It fills the gap between public utility marking and the real conditions beneath your jobsite.

Bring in a qualified private utility locator

A qualified locator uses detection methods selected for the material, depth, site conditions, and suspected utility type. Electromagnetic locating can trace many conductive lines, including energized electrical cable, metallic pipe, and tracer-wire-equipped plastic utility lines. Ground penetrating radar, or GPR, can help identify subsurface anomalies and non-metallic features that may not respond to electromagnetic methods.

Neither method is magic, and a dependable investigation does not rely on a single pass with a single tool. Wet or highly conductive soil, congested utility corridors, reinforced concrete, depth, and the condition of a line can affect detection. An experienced technician interprets the signals, compares findings with visible site evidence and records, and marks the area based on what the investigation supports.

For critical trenching, ask for a clear explanation of the scope. Does the scan cover the full route and proposed depth? Are there inaccessible areas, surface obstructions, or conditions that limit confidence? Were suspected lines identified for safe exposure? Clear communication before the excavation begins prevents assumptions from moving into the field with the crew.

Verify Marks Before the Excavator Moves

Locating is only useful when the information reaches the operator, foreman, and everyone working near the trench. Hold a short field review before digging. Walk the marks with the crew, confirm the route has not changed, and point out crossings, suspected conflicts, and no-machine areas.

The crew should also inspect the ground for clues that may not be reflected in the marks. Meter boxes, pedestals, valves, cleanouts, utility poles, transformers, handholes, junction boxes, and building entry points all suggest potential underground routes. A utility can change direction, split, or cross another line. Do not assume it runs in a straight line just because the visible feature does.

Check the condition of the markings on the day of excavation. Rain, traffic, stockpiled material, grading, or time can obscure paint and flags. If marks are missing, unclear, or appear inconsistent with the work area, stop and request clarification or a refresh. Guessing because the schedule is tight is how avoidable damage occurs.

For projects with deeper excavation, congested utilities, or high-consequence lines, potholing is often the safest next step. This process carefully exposes a utility at selected points to confirm its horizontal location and depth. It takes time, but it gives the excavation team direct information instead of relying solely on surface indicators. The trade-off is straightforward: a controlled investigation now versus a potentially uncontrolled utility strike later.

Do Not Let the Plan Drift During the Work

A locate request and private scan apply to a defined work area. If the trench route moves, expands, deepens, or extends beyond the investigated zone, treat that change as new work. Reassess the area before continuing. The same applies when a crew encounters an unmarked line, unknown material, unexpected concrete, or signs of a buried structure.

Stop excavation when conditions do not match the information available. Do not pull, cut, move, or cover an unknown line to keep the work moving. Secure the area, notify the appropriate parties, and determine what the feature is. A line that looks abandoned may still be active, and an inactive line can still create an obstruction or point to other buried infrastructure nearby.

Keep the trenching operation disciplined after utilities are exposed. Maintain required clearances, protect exposed lines from equipment contact, and avoid placing spoil piles or heavy equipment where they could damage buried or exposed facilities. The risk is not over once the first few feet are open.
